Chembo Corneil Quintet
Sunday May 31 • RWJBarnabas Plaza Stage @ 2pm
Wilson “Chembo” Corniel Jr. is a rhythmic force whose life and music are steeped in the vibrant traditions of the Afro-Caribbean diaspora. Born in Manhattan to Puerto Rican parents and raised in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, Chembo’s early love for percussion led him to study with the likes of Tommy Lopez Sr., “Little Ray” Romero, the renowned Cachete Maldonado, and Louie Bauzo. His journey to refine his craft continued at the Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts and the acclaimed Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba, where he trained under Chucho Valdés and learned from masterful percussionists such as Roberto Vizcaíno, José Luis Quintana “Changuito,” and Sandy Pérez.
Chembo’s dedication and artistry have fueled an illustrious career spanning more than five decades. He’s shared stages and recording studios with some of music’s most legendary figures, including Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Machito, Dave Valentin, Hilton Ruiz, Steve Turre, Larry Harlow, Pete Escovedo, Angela Bofill, Buddy Montgomery, Grady Tate, and many, many more. In addition to his collaborative work, Chembo leads his exciting Latin Jazz quintet, a dynamic ensemble that bridges Afro-Caribbean rhythms and contemporary jazz, that enchant audiences with electrifying performances.
His ability to infuse tradition with innovation is evident across his discography of six albums, all released through his independent label, Chemboro Records. Notably, his third album, Things I Wanted to Do, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Recording in 2010. His latest project, Artistas, Músicos y Poetas, continues to showcase his unique musical voice and artistic vision. Chembo’s impact extends far beyond performance. A passionate educator, he has taught percussion at SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music and The Drummers Collective. He has also led clinics worldwide, instructing and inspiring students to connect with the rich cultural heritage of Afro-Caribbean rhythms. In 2025 Chembo along with Victor Rendon produced his first instructional book "The Art of Playing Tumbadoras/Congas". With a career defined by excellence, a life dedicated to preserving and sharing his culture, and a relentless passion for innovation, Chembo Corniel is an important exponent in the world of percussion and New York City's music culture—an artist whose contributions will continue to resonate for generations to come
I am excited to be part of this great festival; it is also an opportunity to perform in my old neighborhood Jersey City!
